Etania lit the braziers with her Neuma numbly. The soldiers thanked her, coating their swords with oil and fire. She nodded to acknowledge them, words stuck in her throat. She continued to light fires that would provide the camp with Neuma to free those under Narak’s grip. When she finished the last one, she joined the other archers in Rhys’s ranks. Yet, all she could think was: how can I call myself a Vexli when I can’t even save my best friend? She knew her father was right. Damien could be lying. However, as the soldiers around her shifted from foot to foot, waiting for the first attack, Etania had a sinking feeling that Damien was telling the truth.

Come to Jazel’s house...Narak’s voice seemed like it echoed in her mind.

She shook her head, trying to clear it, but goosebumps rose on her arms.

Didn’t you make a promise? Another voice, not quite her own, called to her. A promise to end Damien’s life on your own?

She clutched her fist over her chest. She had made a promise, but was the only way to go to Damien alone?

Or this will be a reality! Narak’s voice continued to haunt her.

An image of the pile of bodies rose in her mind, and Etania started shaking.

A Vexli shouldn’t be scared, the sinister voice continued.

Even though she had never wanted to be the Vexli, she had submitted herself to Melchizedek’s plan. She had power now, power to do something. She squared her shoulders, clenched her teeth, and turned away from the rows of archers. Her Mark stung on her shoulder, censuring her for her decision.

“Vexli, where are you going?” one of them asked.

Etania didn’t answer, but pushed past the archers who tried to stop her.

“Vexli!” They called after her, but she ignored them.

The roar of an enemy dragon called their attention back to the front lines, but Etania did not look back.

Rhys called out in a loud voice, “Archers, ready!”

The soldiers pulled back their bows. Etania began to run.

“Fire!”

She could hear the whoosh of the arrows as they sailed above her and into the enemy. Tears stung her eyes. I’m sorry, she said, but I have to rescue Bayanna, no matter what!

Thus resolved, she headed for a group of horses in the back that were used by messengers. It would take thirty minutes to reach Jazel’s crumbling estate by horseback, and an hour by foot. She couldn’t waste any more time. Bayanna’s life hung in the balance, and this was her chance to kill Damien.

I’ll stop this war before it can go any further.
